When God Feels Distant: Wrestling with Psalm 44

3 min read

We don’t like to talk about it, but every believer has been there. That moment when you pray, and it feels like you’re talking to the ceiling. When the struggle drags on, and God seems silent.

Psalm 44 captures that exact feeling. And what makes it so powerful is that it’s not written by someone who walked away from God—it’s written by someone still holding on.

A Psalm of Confusion and Pain

Psalm 44 isn’t like the usual psalms of praise or repentance. It’s a psalm of confusion—a cry from people who have been faithful, yet feel abandoned.

The sons of Korah start with a reminder of God’s past victories:

"O God, we have heard with our ears, our fathers have told us, what deeds you performed in their days, in the days of old." (Psalm 44:1)

They know God’s history of faithfulness. They’ve heard the stories of His power. They believe in Him. But then comes the shift:

"But you have rejected us and disgraced us and have not gone out with our armies." (Psalm 44:9)

They were faithful. They obeyed. And yet, things still went wrong.

Sound familiar?

When Your Faithfulness Doesn’t Seem to Pay Off

One of the hardest realities to accept is that being faithful doesn’t always mean life will go smoothly. We’re taught that obedience leads to blessing—and it does—but sometimes, there’s a gap between our faithfulness and the breakthrough.

"All this has come upon us, though we have not forgotten you, and we have not been false to your covenant." (Psalm 44:17)

The psalmist is saying, We did everything right, so why does it feel like You left us?

I’ve felt that. I remember a time when I was doing everything I thought God wanted—building, creating, staying disciplined. And yet, doors weren’t opening. The struggle didn’t let up. I started wondering, God, do You even see me?

That’s when I realized: faith is tested most in the silence.

What Do You Do When God Feels Absent?

The sons of Korah didn’t walk away. Instead, they did two things that we can learn from:

1️⃣ They brought their pain to God.
They didn’t sugarcoat it. They didn’t pretend everything was fine. They cried out. Too often, we feel like we have to “protect” God’s reputation by acting like we’re unshaken. But real faith means bringing our real feelings to Him.

2️⃣ They still called on Him for help.
Even in their frustration, they ended the psalm with this plea:

"Rise up; come to our help! Redeem us for the sake of your steadfast love!" (Psalm 44:26)

That’s faith in action—choosing to trust even when you don’t feel like it.

Faith in the Silence

God’s silence isn’t His absence. His delay isn’t His denial. If you’re in a season where it feels like God is distant, keep showing up. Keep seeking Him. Keep trusting.

Because even when we don’t see it—He’s still working.

Take a moment today to be honest with God. If you’re frustrated, tell Him. If you feel forgotten, say it. Faith doesn’t mean avoiding the hard conversations—it means bringing them to the One who can handle them.

That’s it for today

Stay disciplined, stay focused, and keep building. 🚀
