The Weight of Covering

5 min read

When Adam and Eve ate from the Tree of Knowledge, their first instinct was to cover themselves. Guilt, shame, fear—all emotions they had never experienced before—hit them at once.

Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves. (Genesis 3:7)

They tried to fix the problem on their own. But fig leaves? That was a temporary solution for a permanent problem. What happens when the leaves dry up? What happens when they tear?

God, in His mercy, stepped in with a better solution:

The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them. (Genesis 3:21)

This wasn’t just about clothing. This was the first recorded death in Scripture. Blood was shed so Adam and Eve could be covered.

Covering Requires Sacrifice

God didn’t just tell them, “You messed up, now deal with it.” He provided a covering, but that covering required something to die. This was the beginning of a pattern that would run through the entire Bible.

  • When Noah built the ark, the wood was covered in pitch—a protective seal. (Genesis 6:14)

  • When Israel was in Egypt, blood on the doorposts covered their homes from judgment. (Exodus 12:13)

  • When the priests entered the Tabernacle, they could only do so through a blood sacrifice. (Leviticus 16:15-16)

From the very beginning, God was pointing to Jesus.

Fig Leaves vs. The Blood

We still try to cover ourselves with fig leaves today.

  • Success – Thinking achievements will hide our insecurities.

  • Busyness – Keeping ourselves distracted so we don’t have to deal with the real issues.

  • Religion – Doing all the “right” things to make up for past mistakes.

But none of those things truly cover. They’re temporary. Eventually, the weight of our own efforts becomes too much to bear.

Without the shedding of blood, there is no forgiveness of sins. (Hebrews 9:22)

That’s why Jesus came—to offer the final, perfect covering. Not fig leaves. Not temporary fixes. A full, complete covering through His sacrifice.

Where Are You Still Trying to Cover Yourself?

This story makes me ask myself: What fig leaves am I still holding onto? Where am I still trying to patch things up instead of surrendering them to God?

Here’s the truth: Covering yourself is exhausting. Letting God cover you is freeing.

Take 5 minutes today and ask God, “Where am I still trying to cover myself?” Write down anything that comes to mind, and ask Him to help you let go of the fig leaves and trust in His covering instead.

That’s it for today

Stay disciplined, stay focused, and keep building. 🚀
