The Power of Selah: Why You Need to Pause
5 min read
One night, I was in my studio, overwhelmed. Deadlines. Bills. Life hitting from all sides. I hit pause on the track I was mixing, but my mind kept racing.
Then I remembered the Psalm:
"Be still, and know that I am God." (Psalm 46:10)
Sounds simple, right? But for me, being still has always been a struggle
Always Moving, Never Resting
As a kid, I was diagnosed with ADD. I was put on Ritalin early. My mind has always been in motion—juggling ideas, flipping between projects, making connections at light speed.
Sitting still? It felt like losing. If I wasn’t working, I felt like I was falling behind. If I wasn’t creating, I wasn’t moving forward.
But then something in Psalm 46 completely shifted my perspective.
The Meaning of Selah
Most people skip over the word Selah when they read the Psalms. But as a musician? I couldn’t ignore it.
Selah isn’t just a pause—it’s intentional silence. A moment to breathe. A shift in the song’s energy.
What if God built that same pause into our lives on purpose?
God’s Strength in the Stillness
Psalm 46 starts with a truth we all need:
"God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble." (Psalm 46:1)
Notice—God is not just a hiding place (refuge), He is also the power to push forward (strength).
That means God doesn’t just protect you—He empowers you.
And then, in the middle of the chaos—mountains collapsing, oceans roaring, nations raging—David writes:
"There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God." (Psalm 46:4)
Rivers vs. Puddles
We focus on puddles—problems, setbacks, distractions. We obsess over the things that seem massive in the moment but will evaporate with time.
But compared to God’s river? Puddles are nothing.
If you’re always focused on the puddles, you’ll miss the river that’s carrying you forward.
Have you ever been so caught up in a problem that later, you realized God had it handled the whole time?
Be Still Doesn’t Mean Do Nothing
When the Psalm says, "Be still and know that I am God," it’s not telling us to be passive. It’s not telling us to do nothing. It’s telling us to be still enough to recognize who is in control.
Still enough to hear His voice.
Still enough to move with wisdom, not panic.
Still enough to let faith override fear.
That night in the studio, I took my hands off the keyboard and just sat. No music. No distractions. Just silence.
And in that silence? Clarity.
Sometimes, the answer you’re looking for isn’t in doing more. It’s in stopping.
This week, build your own Selah moment. Take five minutes—just five—and sit in silence. No phone, no notifications, no music. Just be still.
Then, pay attention to what shifts in your spirit.
That’s it for today
Stay disciplined, stay focused, and keep building. 🚀
