Milk, Honey, and the Danger of Comfort

5 min read

When elders know their time is almost up, the filter comes all the way off.

Moses? No exception.

As the Israelites stood on the brink of the Promised Land, Moses—120 years old and knowing he wouldn’t enter with them—delivered one final message. No sugarcoating. No holding back. Just raw truth and wisdom, sealed in what we now call Deuteronomy, the last book of the Torah.

"Deuteronomy" comes from the Greek Deuteronomion, meaning "second law." But this wasn’t Moses making up new rules. It was his last chance to drive the message home, ensuring the new generation understood their covenant with God before stepping into the land their ancestors had only dreamed of.

At the heart of his speech? The Shema.

"Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength." (Deuteronomy 6:4–5)

This wasn’t just a nice saying—it was the foundation of Israel’s faith. God is one. No idols. No divided loyalty. Even today, observant Jews recite the Shema twice daily as a declaration of faith.

But there’s another phrase Moses kept repeating—one that has always stood out to me.

A Land Flowing with Milk and Honey

Moses described Canaan as "a land flowing with milk and honey."

Milk symbolized fertile land, abundant livestock, and nourishment. But honey? That’s where things get interesting.

Recently, I read an article on the properties of honey. What I learned blew my mind.

Archaeologists discovered 3,000-year-old honey inside King Tut’s tomb. And get this—it was still edible. No mold, no decay, no spoilage.

Honey seems to defy bacterial growth, time, and even entropy itself.

Then it went deeper. The hexagon, the shape of a honeycomb, is said to be the most stable shape in the universe—stronger than triangles, squares, or circles.

And here’s the wild part: honey vibrates at 540 Hz, a frequency linked to love, harmony, and healing. Some even claim it has the ability to activate dormant human DNA.

So when God calls Canaan "a land flowing with milk and honey," it’s more than just a poetic phrase.

Milk nourishes the body.
Honey preserves.
Milk provides.
Honey sustains.

The Promised Land wasn’t just a place of temporary blessing—it was built for longevity, stability, and divine abundance.

When Moses delivered his final warning.

It was…

Not about war.
Not about hardship.
Not about famine, enemies, or oppression.

His warning was about comfort.

The very blessings they were about to receive—the vineyards, the cities, the land flowing with milk and honey—could be their downfall.

📖 “You will eat from vineyards you did not plant… but when you have eaten and are satisfied, be careful not to forget the Lord.” (Deuteronomy 6:11-12)

Success has a way of making people soft.

And when discipline fades, entitlement rises.

Moses saw it coming for Israel. And watching Extraction the other day, I realized the same thing is happening now.

The Extraction Experiment

I was watching this survival show where contestants were dropped into the wilderness with minimal resources to test their survival skills. One contestant? An 18-year-old whose parents—both strong, both Black—thought he was up for the challenge.

They gave him more equipment than the others. They prepared him as best they could.

But within hours?

😳 Complaining.
😳 Cussing out his parents.
😳 Begging to be extracted.

His father, nearly in tears, said:

"Maybe I didn’t make him tough enough… Maybe he had it too easy."

The kid didn’t last one day.

It wasn’t because he lacked resources.

It wasn’t because he lacked intelligence.

It was because he lacked discipline.

And that’s exactly what Moses was talking about.

The Blessing That Becomes a Curse

If you grew up in the ‘80s or ‘90s, you know the struggle.

  • Many of us didn’t have our fathers around.

  • We lacked financial means.

  • We had to grind for everything.

We made a promise:

"My kids won’t struggle like I did."

And we kept that promise.

✅ They have all the games.
✅ The freshest clothes & shoes.
✅ We never miss a game.
✅ Latest & greatest everything.

We made life comfortable.

But here’s what Moses knew:

📖 "Israel became fat and unruly; they abandoned the God who made them." (Deuteronomy 32:15)

Blessings aren’t bad. But when they replace discipline, they become a curse.

  • Without struggle, there’s no strength.

  • Without sacrifice, there’s no gratitude.

  • Without discipline, there’s no character.

We think hardship is the enemy.

But sometimes, ease is even more dangerous.

Moses' Final Words: Choose Life

Moses didn’t just remind them about the blessings waiting for them. He also warned them:

This land is yours… but it can be taken away.

Deuteronomy 30:19 is one of the most powerful moments in all of Scripture:

"I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live."

This was the choice before them. Obedience leads to life. Disobedience leads to destruction.

Moses wasn’t just giving them history or rules—he was laying down a challenge.

And that challenge is still relevant today.

Are we choosing life?
Are we following the wisdom of God, walking in His promises, and preserving what He’s given us?

Or are we chasing things that decay—things that spoil, fade, and fall apart over time?

Moses' words weren’t just for ancient Israel. They’re for us, too.

Take This With You

Canaan was more than just land—it was a lesson.

God’s promises are nourishing like milk.
God’s blessings are lasting like honey.
But the choice? That’s on us.

So here’s the real question:

Are you choosing life?

That’s it for today
